| 3) Tripurasundhari Temple at Udaipur:- |
Sri Tripurasundari Temple is one among the 51 Shakthi Pithas where the Right Hind Limb of Devi had fallen. In 1501.A.D.Maharaja Dhanya Manikya wanted to construct a vishnu Temple at this place. One night the Raja received a divine message from Devi Bhagavathi to consecrate Sri Tripurasundari at this hill top temple. Since it was already dedicated to lord Vishnu he could not obey the divine order. But the divine command was repeated to him the next night. Then the King did as he was ordered.
Another peculiar yet fascinating aspect of Tripurasundari Temple is the image of Lord Vishnu; the God is being worshiped here in the form of a “Shalagramashila”. Such an instance of Vishnu being worshipped along with Shakthi Devi in a Kali Temple in any Shakthi Peeta is not only rare but a unique feature in this Sub Continent. The Temple is built on a relatively small hillock, which is convex shaped, almost like a Tortoise (Kurma). Thus also referred as Kurma petta. The Temple of Tripurasundari or Matabari faces west. Though the main entrance is in the West, there is a small entrance also in the North. The idol of Goddess Tripurasundari which adorns the Temple is made up of Touch-stone. The height of the idol is 1metre 57 cm and its width is 64 cm. It is being installed on a stone altar. She stands upright on the idol of Shiva that lays in shavasana. Five mundas are supposed to be engraved on the surface of the altar which bears Devi. There is another stone idol inside the Temple and it is known as “CHHOTOMAA or CHANDI”. The idol is 48 cm tall and extends 35 cm bilaterally. Here the Devi is being worshipped through “VIRACHAAR TANTRA”. The main poojaries are Sri Ashish Chakravarthi( Shandilya Gothram) and Sri Narayan Chakravarthi(Vathsava Gothram). There is a big Pond called Kalayan Sagar on the East of the temple. This pond is home to big Tortoises and fishes. Even today at12 noon animal sacrifices are being offered every day. The Maha prasadam is being offered to devotees at Rs.25 at 2 P.M.The Diwavli is celebrated with great pomp here. The temple timings is 4.30 A.M to 9.30 P.M with a break between 2.00P.M.to3.30 P.M. In the temple premises the Tripurasundari Ashtakam of Sri Adhi Sankara is written in Bengali on a wooden board. On top of the Ashtakam it is written as follows.“Sri Sri Matha Tripurasundari Stothram ,Kanchi Peetadheeswara Swami Jayendra Kumar Sarswathi Swamigal Virachitham”. The board requires fresh painting. |
